Questions About Our School

About Monarch Global Academy Laurel

Monarch Global Academy Laurel is an IB (International Baccalaureate Years Programme) public contract school serving Anne Arundel County families with children in kindergarten through eighth grade residing in the Brock Bridge/Maryland City/Jessup attendance areas. The school establishes a culture that treats each student as an individual and prepares them to be successful in the 21st century.

Monarch Global Academy Laurel emphasizes high expectations for academic achievement, character development, an integration of the arts, and a focus on teaching contextual thinking and creative problem solving.

What is International Baccalaureate Years Programme?

Monarch Global Academy Laurel is an Official IB (International Baccalaureate Years Programme) School for PYP. The PYP model promotes international-mindedness as a key cultural teacher where teaching and learning address human commonality, diversity, and multiple perspectives.

IB challenges students to think differently and critically. It teaches students to be self-motivated and helps them advocate for how they learn best and to understand they are a part of a world that is bigger than themselves.

The curriculum is built around a “central idea,” and all subjects are taught with a “transdisciplinary” approach. For example, during an educational unit about entrepreneurship, students learned how to invent a product in science, how to price the product in math and write a jingle for their product during music class. This method gives students a deeper understanding of what they are learning and sets them up for long-term academic success.

For a more extensive overview about IB, we partnered with our friends and colleagues at Monarch Academy Annapolis and created a video series to visually demonstrate the difference between IB and traditional classroom teaching.
