Welcome Back Letter 2018

Dear Monarch Families,

I hope that you are enjoying your summer break and are pumped to start a new school year.  Please take time to read this entire opening letter so that you can learn about our expectations and the very important work we will do together this year.

Within the next couple of weeks, we will re-open our doors to welcome students back to a new school year!  Together we will jump start our school year strong with a focus on academic excellence and building community.  This year, we will continue to bridge strong partnerships between school, home, and our community in our quest of creating a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students.

Our school goals this year will be accomplished through the use of Whole Brain Teaching (WBT), Project Based Learning (PBL), Mindfulness and continued differentiated instruction. We are committed to delivering rigorous instruction to ensure that our students are prepared for the next level.  We will continue to focus on meeting the unique needs of each student and making our vision and mission the core of our daily work.  We know that you want the best for your children and we share the same sentiment!  As such, we must work together to ensure that each child excels both academically, socially, and behaviorally. This year one of my personal goals will be to increase our family engagement by creating more Parent-Centered activities and support groups. Our Parent-Liaison, Ms. Beane will be reaching out to you for your interest. Should you need to contact Ms. Beane regarding enrollment issues or concerns please give her a call at 443-642-2402.

Our parent and teacher volunteers have worked diligently to prepare a welcome packet for our families, which can be found on our website and communication site  www.livingtree.com To reduce our impact on the environment and increase access, many of our resources (e.g., school calendar, school supplies, parent handbook, etc.) have been posted accordingly. Please sign up for Living Tree (link to MABC Living Tree page). Please contact the school to obtain our Living Tree code (443-642-2402 or info@monarchacademybaltimore.org ).

School begins on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 8:00 a.m.  Classroom assignments will be posted on the campus on the first day. You may also find your child’s homeroom teacher listed on the mailing label on the front of the envelope.  Breakfast will be served at 8 am.  Our first announcement will start at 8:15 a.m. to signal the start of the school day.

With the exception of early release Wednesdays, dismissal will occur at 2:40 p.m. every day.  On early release Wednesdays, all students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. to allow teachers to participate in critical professional development. (See YMCA  information  for details about our affordable before and aftercare program).  LINK TO YMCA

Should you bring your child to school on September 4, please proceed to the designated grade area where teachers will be waiting to meet their classes. Each teacher/designated staff member will have a sign with the room number of his or her class for easy identification.  Teachers will then walk their class to the classroom. Please help us reduce traffic congestion and confusion by saying goodbye to your child at the front lobby door, side door or lineup area also known as the Kiss n Go Student Drop off Zones. Please DO NOT double park on Kirk Ave when dropping your child off for safety concerns.

Monarch will continue to offer yellow bus service to students who are eligible. Bus riders must have an updated bus contract on file.  Please contact Mr. Kimbrough if you have any questions for assistance. Middle School students are eligible to ride MTA and will receive one free Charm card from City schools if they meet the requirements.  If your child rides the MTA, students will be allowed to ride free until Charm cards are issued by BCPSS.  Lastly, our enrollment continues to grow and we are quickly approaching our enrollment capacity. Please note that our enrollment has increased significantly and appears to have reached capacity in certain grades. Please don’t delay in turning in required enrollment documents such as up to date immunizations, proof of residency or updated emergency contact information.  We will continue to make every effort to serve our families.

Also, new this year, Middle School students can wear either tan or navy khaki pants. This year only. We are unifying our community and easing the transition from 5th to 6th-grade families.  Remember we are a uniform school, all students are expected to be in uniform every day.

I look forward to continuing our work together as we support Monarch Academy Baltimore Charter community. I hope you enjoy the final days of summer!

Warm Regards,

Kiara Hargrove, Principal

Ahmed Evans, Head of School
